Changing your lawn mower’s oil is one of your machinery’s most basic routine maintenance tasks. However, if not done correctly a bad oil change can cause quite a bit of damage to your equipment, and even result in a pricey repair. To make sure your mower is being cared for correctly, read our helpful instructions below on how to correctly complete a lawn mower oil change.

Tools

Changing engine oil can be quite a messy job. As a result, it’s always wise to place down a tarp or a few newspapers before you get started and make sure to have a durable set of gloves and a large oil pan on hand. You’ll also need to make sure you have a pint of fresh engine oil nearby, as well as a fresh filter, wrench, and socket wrench.

Prep

Now that you have everything you need on hand, you’ll want to go ahead and start up your lawn mower’s engine. Running your engine for a few moments should help heat up your oil and make changing the oil even easier. After a few minutes, go ahead and cut the engine, place the mower onto blocks, and remove the spark plugs with your socket wrench. This is also a great time to locate your drain plug to place your oil pan beneath it and soak your new filter in a bit of fresh oil.

Changing the Oil

Now that everything is prepped and ready, go ahead and grab your wrench to remove your mower’s drain plug bolt. Your mower’s old oil should immediately begin pouring out into the oil pan below, but you may need to cajole your mower a bit to get all of the remaining liquid out. Once the oil has finished draining, you’ll need to once again grab your wrench and use it to remove the bolt holding your old filter in place. Be sure to dispose of the old filter appropriately, then clean your bolt and drain plug with some fresh oil. Reinsert the bolt and fresh filter into your mower before reattaching the drain plug and refilling the engine with fresh oil.
