Trailers can make any number of back-breaking jobs a walk in the park, but there’s a variety of shapes, sizes, and types. Above all, getting the right type of trailer for your needs is vital. We here at Nova International know that can be a hassle, so we’ve put together a brief guide to buying a trailer by its type. Car Haulers

As the name suggests, a car hauler is typically used for transporting vehicles, like bringing a vintage model to a car show or bringing a newly-purchased vehicle to a client or customer. They let you move vehicles without adding to their mileage, causing wear and tear, or risking road damage.

Tilt Trailers

These are a bit more unique, named for the hydraulics that allow the front of the trailer to tilt upwards. That allows the rear section to double as a ramp, making it easier to:

  • Load and unload cargo, since there’s no need for an external ramp.
  • Operate in tight quarters, again thanks to the lack of a ramp.
  • Increase storage space—once again, thanks to the ramp.

Dump Trailers

Dump trailers have hydraulics similar to tilt trailers, but they have raised sides and are typically used for moving loose material like dirt, rocks, sand, and more. The name comes from their ability to simply dump that material out the back once the front is lifted. Dump trailers are commonly seen in agricultural, landscaping, and construction projects.

Utility Trailers

Some of the simplest trailers around, utility models come in a wide array of sizes and shapes, making them a sort of all-purpose trailer type. They can be used for moving small items, power equipment, powersports vehicles, farming supplies, and more.

Cargo Trailers

Also called enclosed trailers, these are relatively simple, like utility trailers. What sets cargo trailers apart is the fully-enclosed cargo bed, complete with walls and ceiling. This added layer helps protect the cargo from the elements like precipitation and sunlight, and from the prying eyes of would-be thieves. These, again, come in a dizzying array of sizes, shapes, and materials, so you’ll be able to find one that perfectly matches your needs.

Considerations

Keep in mind that the type of trailer isn’t the one and only concern. Your tow vehicle will be important, since not all trailers are compatible with all vehicle types. The hitching style and the tow vehicle’s weight capacity will be hard limits on your options, unless you’re willing to rent a stronger vehicle every time you tow.

The type of cargo also factors in heavily. The size, weight, and various physical characteristics and needs of the cargo will impact the size, material, and type of trailer you require.

We hope this helps you find the perfect one! For more information, or to see the trailers we have for sale, contact us at Nova International. We proudly serve the people of Atlantic Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick—let us serve you today!
